An expert team from the Institute for Public Development is leading a series of interviews with local politics, representatives of the local business, NGOs and the media in five Bulgarian municipalities – Sozopol, Nessebar, Kazanlak, Sandanski and Petrich.
The main purpose is researching of the consequences from “buying votes” and governing of economical majorities in the municipal councils over the life of the local communities.
The research is a part of the project “Buying votes” or the Death of Local Democracy”, funded by the Trust for Civil Society in Central & Eastern Europe.
The results from the research will be presented to the public in December 2009.
The realization of the project is a part of the Organization’s efforts to explore the “buying of votes” phenomenon in the Bulgarian political sphere and its practical consequences over the Bulgarian’s citizen life.
Members from the Institute of Public Environment Development have accomplished monitoring of the election process during the elections for Parliament in 2005 and the partial elections for municipal councilors in Kazanlak in 2008.
Experts from the Institute are the authors of the report that was widely media covered, named “Mayors on Lease. Premises for the mass buying of votes during the local elections in 2007”
